Death of Wolverine issues to have Holo Foil covers

Harkening back to the 1990’s heyday of special covers for big comics, Marvel’s Death of Wolverine mini-series will have something very special in the form of Weapon Etched Holo Foil covers.

It’s kind of hard to believe this is happening (and even harder to believe that it’ll stick), but the death of Wolverine is almost here. One of Marvel Comics’ biggest and most beloved characters, Wolverine will meet his end as his healing factor has somehow left him and he’s in the crosshairs of just about every villain and enemy that he has.

With a high profile launch for the four issue mini-series planned, Marvel wanted to have an equally big time cover on the racks as well. That’s where all the foil-wrapped fun comes in.

“With a huge event like DEATH OF WOLVERINE, we wanted to give retailers and fans a cover that stands out on shelves and really helps to grab your attention,” says Marvel’s SVP of Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “Something that says this is an event to behold. Whenever you do any kind of special cover treatment, you want to make sure the story can back it up. Charles & Steve have an epic story planned, and we’re confident that when you crack open DEATH OF WOLVERINE #1, you’ll agree!”

“When Steve McNiven first turned in his cover to DEATH OF WOLVERINE #1, we knew we had something special in our hands,” says Executive Editor Mike Marts. “A cover for the ages. What better way to celebrate this special cover than by giving it the special treatment. Just the other day I saw the process involved in creating this amazing cover—it’s really beautiful. It’s a fantastic way to enhance and showcase this spectacular cover that Steve has drawn.”

I love this kind of stuff myself, not the alleged death of one of my favorite comic characters- gimmicky covers. I love ’em. To bits. Seriously, I was in heaven in the 90’s with all these die-cut, foiled out, glow-in-the-dark, embossed monstrosities. While I’m well aware that they can be a bit of an acquired taste for some, I think they’re just plain fun and I was bummed out when they all but died off after the decade ended and comics as a market came back down to Earth.

To see bigger companies like Marvel and others start to phase them back in is an awesome surprise. More please… Just not too many, okay?

Death of Wolverine #1, complete with Weapon Etched Foil Embossed cover, lands on the racks from the team of Charles Soule and Steve McNiven this coming September. It should be quite an Autumn for fans of the old Canucklehead.
