Starz’ new series Outlander goes back in time this Summer

The time-travelling, mystical show takes one woman back from the post-WWII era UK to the year 1743.

The “Outlander” series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure in one epic tale. The series, adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s international best-selling books by Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation”), is currently filming on location in Scotland and is set to premiere on STARZ this Summer. It follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945, who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743. Upon her arrival, she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. But when she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate relationship is ignited. Now, Claire’s heart is torn between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Sci-fi fans have seen many a time travel story over the years, but with a more heavy tilt towards history and drama, this one is definitely of a different ilk. Outlander also has a more mystical tone than I think pretty much  any time-travel story out there right now, most of which is decidedly more technological than anything else.

As for cache, Outlander has quite a bit of that too with the books that it’s based on coming from bestselling author Diana Gabaldon and the TV adaptation being written by none other than Ronald D. Moore, who you might know from his work on shows like Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and the almighty Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Outlander warps onto the Starz network this Summer.
