Once Upon a Time (comics) Preview

If you’re a fan of the ABC TV show of the same name, then Marvel Comics has a mythical graphic novel with your name on it.

The Evil Queen has, quite literally, captured the Huntsman’s heart — and now he’s her slave. This is the never-before-told tale behind their twisted relationship — and what happens when a good man is forced to do bad.

When Regina cooks up yet another devious plan to capture Snow White — this time by allying with a pack of power-hungry werewolves — the Huntsman comes face-to-face with his past — and an independent spirit in Red Riding Hood that just may match his own. Can these two break free of the forces that bind them and save Snow White? When put to the test, where will the Huntsman’s loyalties lie? Has the Evil Queen stolen his heart in more ways than one?

Set in a fairy tale world that’s been pressed into the modern age, Once Upon a Time has a good chunk of the classic characters that you know and love (and not just one’s from Disney movies either) all in one world and playing off of each other. The takes on them that the show has isn’t really all that soft and cuddly either as the tone is a lot closer to the original stories from ages ago rather than the more modern cartoon interpretations.

It’s interesting to see a comic book version of Once. I didn’t now how well the show could translate to the printed page, but it’s looking like series fans should be pleased, especially since the book was plotted by Once Upon a Time’s ‘on screen’ writer & producer Daniel T. Thomsen and was co-written by Corinna Bechko of Planet of the Apes fame.

Also good news for fans is that the roster of artists handling the book is top notch as well. Expect to see the visuals of Nimit Malavia, Vasilis Lolos, Mike Del Mundo, Mike Henderson and Michael Kaluta all included in its pages.

Once Upon a Time: Shadow of the Queen hits stands and the Marvel Comics digital reader App on September 4th, Once Upon a Time the television show airs Sundays at 8/7c on ABC.
