The Grandfather of FPS’ returns in an alternate universe action/adventure that rewrites history.
Developed by MachineGames, this newest take on the classic Wolfenstein franchise looks a whole lot different than any version I remember playing. For starters, the game is being billed as a reimagining of the franchise, so you know right from the jump that there are some wholesale changes afoot (I didn’t notice any supernatural elements in the trailer). It’s also being called an ‘action/adventure shooter’ and will apparently feature story pretty heavily, though I’m sure there’ll be plenty of shooting to do as well with an entire world populated with Nazi forces.
“We are excited to bring a new chapter of Wolfenstein to gamers everywhere,” said Jens Matthies, creative director at MachineGames. “As fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud.”
The New Order takes place in an alternate timeline where Germany won WWII and basically laid siege to the globe. It’s unclear just how deep the rebellion goes on this alternate Earth, but you will be playing as a new version (presumably) of series hero B.J. Blazkowicz once again. He’s got his work cut out for him too because on this Earth, the bad guys have been in charge for quite a while- The New Order takes place in the 1960’s.
You won’t have to do any universe-hopping to get a copy though, Wolfenstein: The New Order will be on store shelves around the end of the year for the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and those looming “next generation” consoles everyone keep going on about.
