Witchblade variants coming to Image Comics next month

Image Comics and Top Cow are priming a variant cover onslaught for September, bringing Witchblade to the publisher’s lineup.

An Image Comics classic from Top Cow and artist/co-creator Marc Silvestri, Witchblade has been around since the publisher’s early days. It actually debuted just a few years after Image Comics did, in 1995. Its was no short run either, as Witchblade ran almost a full two decades, wrapping up its initial run in 2015. A relaunch saw the book return to shelves in 2017, before concluding in 2020.

Fast forward to 2024 though, and Witchblade is back. The reborn series once again stars NYPD detective and reluctant super-heroine Sara Pezzini, though with a modern touch. Headed up by Marguerite Bennett and Guiseppe Cafaro, Witchblade has updated Pezzini’s origin, as well as modernized other now-classic elements.

Marguerite Bennett and Guiseppe Cafaro’s current run on Witchblade (2024) features a reimagined origin, with contemporary takes on familiar characters, as well as fresh story arcs to hook new fans and rekindle the energy and excitement that fueled the ’90s Image Revolution. New York City Police Detective Sara Pezzini’s life is forever fractured by her father’s murder. Cold, cunning, and hellbent on revenge, Sara now stalks a vicious criminal cabal beneath the city, where an ancient power collides and transforms her into something wild, magnificent, and beyond her darkest imaginings. How will Sara use this ancient power? …Or will she be consumed by it?

Witchblade is running monthly right now, from Image Comics, and is heading into a milestone. That would be issue #25, which drops in September. And to coincide with that magical issue, Image and Top Cow are prepping a monster-sized run of variant covers.

Variating on a Witchblade

As mentioned, Witchblade fans will have a lot of options next month. September 2026 will see a huge collection of variant covers land on Image‘s various titles, all of which will star Ms. Pezzini, as she’s depicted teaming up with the various title’s main characters.

No, these don’t contain crossover stories, the team-ups will be limited to the covers only. Still, most of those make for some pretty sharp imagery, stocked with a ton of variety in both style and composition. The comics bearing the variants will start hitting stands on September 2nd with Royals #6 and the debuting Tales of Wonder #1.

From there, fans can look for weekly drops. September 9th will bring Geiger #25 and that big Witchblade (2024) #25, plus more. The Darkness (2025) #8 follows those, on September 16th, with six additional variants. That’s before the initiative really explodes on September 25th, with a monster slate of books. Badrock #3, Invincible Universe: Capes #11, and more are all on tap for that. And as for the final installment, fans can look for Final Boss #10, Spawn #379, and more to all take part.
