SDCC ’25: The first trailer arrives for Red Sonja’s return, as the film heads to Comic Con

It’s a big summer for Red Sonja, as the movie now has a first-look trailer and will be making an impact at SDCC last this month.

It’s been a while, and we mean a while, since there’s been a big screen appearance for the barbarian/sword and sorcery genre. All the rage in the 80s, the themes have only appeared periodically in any form of media since, and even more rarely when it comes to the movies.

This summer will change that though, as Red Sonja returns with a brand new reboot from Samuel Goldwyn Films, and directed by MJ Bassett. The movie will star actress Matilda Lutz in the title role, with actors Robert Sheehan and Martyn Ford also on board. The film will find Sonja captured and forced to fight in the gladiatorial pits of a villain called Dragan, in a story that looks to be a prequel to the She-Devil with a Sword that fans know and love.

Captured. Chained. Forced to fight for survival. Red Sonja must battle her way through the blood-soaked pits of a tyrant’s empire and rally an army of outcasts to reclaim her freedom and take down Dragan and his ruthless bride, Dark Annisia.

Red Sonja arrives in theaters this August the 15th, and will appear on streaming platforms on the 29th. As mentioned though, you’ll be seeing more of the heroine before then, as she’ll be making her way to San Diego Comic Con later this month.

Matilda Lutz, Robert Sheehan, and Martyn Ford will all be part of a panel presentation for the film, kicking off at 5:30 pm (pacific time) on July 24th at the San Diego Convention Center’s Ballroom 20. There the cast will discuss “bringing the comic book icon to life in the new reboot.” So if you’re a Sonja fan who’ll be at the big show, you might want to stop by.
