Marvel Comics heads back to Planet Hulk this fall, for the original tale’s 20th

Believe it or not, Planet Hulk is two decades old, and Marvel is set to celebrate the anniversary with an all-new story.

SMASH

It was 20 years ago, when the Hulk was jettisoned into deep space and crash landed on the planet Sakaar. It was there that he was enslaved and battled in the gladiatorial arena of the Red King, before busting loose and doing what Hulks do best.

Of course, that story led into World War Hulk, and in general had a myriad of effects on the Marvel Universe going forward. The publisher points out that even the recent Imperial event played off of it, not to mention events in the MCU. To many fans, it’s a modern classic, and Marvel feels the same.

This fall the publisher will be celebrating the savage story’s anniversary with all-new revisitation, from Greg Pak and artist Carlo Pagulayan. Taking place within the time of the original, Return to Planet Hulk #1 will present the big guy with a choice, one where he can either become the savior of Sakaar, or its destructor.

“Working on Planet Hulk remains one of the greatest joys of my comics career, and I’m enormously grateful for the love so many readers have shared for the storyline over the years,” Pak shared. “This 20th anniversary special is a celebration and a huge thank you to everyone — and a chance to take one more journey into the dark heart of the Green Scar and add to the wild mythos of Sakaar. It’s also a huge pleasure to be working with Carlo Pagulayan and Mark Paniccia again — it’s like we never left off, and it feels like home.”
