Your own piece of Arrakis is awaiting in Dune: Awakening, as the survival MMO will allow players to develop their own strongholds.

If you’re a fan of Dune, and we mean any form of the fictional universe created by Frank Herbert, then you know that its central world of Arrakis is anything but genteel. Though the planet is hugely important to humanity’s empire, it’s a harsh wasteland of rock, sand, and wind. And that’s not even counting the sandworms and warring factions.
From the looks of things too, Funcom’s upcoming MMO based on the Dune universe will be presenting all of the natural hazards of Arrakis to players. As to how they’ll deal with those issues in Dune: Awakening, well they’re going to have to build, baby, build.
Base building looks like it’ll be a big part of the title, and players will be able to build their structures either in solo or co-op fashion. And from what the newest trailer shows off, those fans are going to be able to make some pretty awesome stuff.
Start out by raising a small shelter as protection against the sun and bandits, and as a place to expand your crafting capabilities, even letting you refine blood into drinkable water. Expand your base, explore, build additional bases, and eventually, choose a Great House to align with. Once you have earned a place among the Atreides or the Harkonnen, you can begin to build with their unique architecture, visually inspired by Denis Villeneuve and Legendary’s award-winning blockbuster movies. From imposing and intricate fortresses, you will control the flow of spice.

Dune fans will be able to get building (and otherwise playing) when Dune: Awakening hits its “large-scale Beta weekend” that kicks off on May 9th (running through May 12th). If you don’t have a key and would like to get in on the action, make sure to check out the Global LAN Party Broadcast, as “tens of thousands of Beta keys will be handed out to viewers”, according to Funcom. That’s… that’s a lot of keys.
If you do miss out on all of that though, stay tuned, because the game’s release is coming up just in time to kick off the summer. Look for Dune: Awakening to launch for Steam on the PC on June 10th.
