The post-apocalyptic world of Metro comes to VR this November

The dark world of Metro is coming back, and is set to hit virtual reality platforms in November with Metro Awakening.

Wake up to the apocalypse

For the first time, the popular Metro series of post-apocalyptic shooters is coming to virtual reality. It’s actually been a while since we’ve seen the Russia-set epic in any form, as Metro Exodus debuted back in 2019. Metro Awakening though, is a shake different than that.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s still a first-person shooter, but Metro Awakening brings the series into virtual reality for the first time. It’s also not a sequel, but the first prequel to Metro 2033, written by Dmitry Glukhovsky and getting into the origin of Serdar.

If you don’t remember him, Serdar is a doctor who’s searching for his wife, and battling his failing sanity while he does so. Did someone say cosmic horror? Yeah, kinda feels like that.

Crafted by series creator Dmitry Glukhovsky, this standalone prequel to Metro 2033 follows Serdar, a doctor braving the treacherous tunnels in search of his missing wife. As his sanity is pushed to the limit, Serdar confronts the edge between life and death, ultimately awakening as Khan, the legendary mystic figure whose wisdom and understanding of the tunnels’ supernatural forces will echo through time, becoming the spiritual guide shaping the fate of those who dwell in the Metro depths.

“The Metro franchise isn’t just about survival; it’s also about the powerful stories that emerge from its world. By collaborating with Dmitry, we’ve created something truly special—a deeply personal narrative that will resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers,” said Martin de Ronde, Game and Creative Director at Vertigo Games.
