Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Roman Griffin Davis to portray the Dickens’ in The King of Kings

An upcoming animated film based on the family of Charles Dickens’ and Jesus Christ will have an all-star voice cast.

Positively Dickensian

We first told you about The King of Kings a few weeks back. The animated movie, which is coming to theaters next year, comes out of Mofac Animation, and splits its narrative between two figures in two time-periods. The first is famed British writer Charles Dickens, along with his family, while the second is none other than the King of Kings Himself, Jesus Christ.

It might seem an odd pairing when you first hear it, but the former plays into the latter in a very big real-world way. Dickens had a short-story that he wrote that was based on the life of Jesus, though it’s definitely one of his lesser known ones. He penned the piece as a way to connect with his youngest son, as he tried to balance his professional and personal lives. From the just-announced cast, it certainly seems as though Mofac and producer Anfernee Kim are shooting big with the adaptation.

As you can see above, Kenneth Branagh will portray Dickens, while Uma Thurman will play his wife Catherine. Rounding out the major players will be Roman Griffin Davis as their boy Walter, though that’s obviously far from all the actors that’ll be on board. Mofac says that it’s a cast that’ll be firmly “A-list” as well, so stay tuned.

“It is through the Dickens family that our audience experiences the life of Jesus Christ, and Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman and Roman Griffin Davis bring all the emotion, awe, heart and gravitas to these essential characters,” says producer Anfernee Kim. “These three actors are at the core of our story, and anchor a truly impressive cast – many of whom we look forward to sharing in the near future.”

Mofac Animation press release

Directed by Korean talent Seong-ho “Jay” Jang, the faith-based film is now in its “final stages of production” at Mofac. That includes performance recordings with the listed actors, which is happening both in the UK and in the US’ Hawaiian Islands, plus several other global locales.

There’s a lot more to come on The King of Kings before it hits theaters some time in 2025.
