Release date, expansions, and pre-orders announced for LEGO Super Mario

With pre-orders open now, Nintendo and LEGO’s joint project is coming up later this year. And it’s set to be a lot bigger than previously announced.

Earlier this year we told you about the above Nintendo and LEGO team-up. The two companies are joining forces for something kind of all-together new for both. The new sets are not quite games, but they’re not quite what you normally expect from LEGO sets either.

More or less, these are Super Mario courses that you don’t just build, but interact with. And while the first round of reveals focused on just the “Starter Course”, that’s not all you’ll find on store shelves this summer.

Unlocking new courses

Though that Starter Course will be needed to make the expansions work, it looks like you’re going to be able to build it out quite a bit. Today’s reveals include the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set and the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set.

The Starter Course can be combined with LEGO Super Mario Expansion Sets, which each unlock unique challenges and characters to play with and against friends. The first Expansion Sets, also revealed today, include the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set and the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set. And because the products all include modular builds, fans are fully in charge of creating exactly the LEGO level course they want to see Mario come to life in.

Fans will also love the free LEGO® Super Mario™ app by the LEGO Group, a supporting feature to further enhance the physical play experience. It keeps track of scores to encourage continuous rebuilding, as well as it provides digital building instructions with zoom and rotate viewing tools to make building easier, suggests other creative ways to build and play, and is a safe forum to share ideas with friends.

Can’t wait? Pre-orders are open

Aside from the new reveals, we also got a word on both the release date and the pre-orders for the initial round of kits. Nintendo says that wave 1 will all be out and about on August 1st, 2020. So you can dive into the LEGO/Nintendo action just as the summer is starting to wind down.

And if you’re worried about missing out, you can indeed pre-order right now. LEGO says that the sets will be available for order from additional retailers as well, but they have the link live right now on their own online shop.

Running $59.99 USD, only the Starter Course is up presently. Apparently there’s a nice little bonus too, if you do order now, in the form of a free ‘Monty Mole themed’ add-on (a $14.99 USD value according to LEGO).

So if you’re planning on getting in on this already, it might make sense to pre-order.
