BG’s Game of the Month for June is Vampyr

The blood-sucking RPG Vampyr took our gold award for June, making it our Game of the Month. Though our runners up were pretty great too.

Solid month

June is the usual kickoff for summertime here in the US, though it’s usually not all that great for new games This past June though, was an actual good month for releases, with Vampyr, Warhammer 40k Inquisitor – Martyr and more. In fact, no matter what you’re into, there was likely something that got your attention.

Personally, I loved the Shaq Fu re-imagining too and the great version of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus that hit the Switch. There were some legit good titles hitting for everything. So with that, let’s dive in and have a look at our Game of the Month for June…

Vampyr

From our review:

This is a great game and a fun adventure. I do not think there has been a similar game in this vampire setting. On top of that, we get to experience London in 1918 and we get a great experience of this dire time. I like to describe this game as a narrative game with a side of action. There is plenty of combat, but the real star of this game is the NPCs (can’t believe I just wrote that), the branching story line and the choices players must make during game play. There are a few items that I wish were done better, but they do not impede the game. The story is enthralling and I was on the edge of my seat as it unraveled. I would highly recommend picking up and sinking your teeth into Vampyr.

Second place and beyond

So what backed up Vampyr? Well, two games actually tied for second in June, and they were Warhammer 40k Inquisitor – Martyr and Ys VIII.

From our review of Warhammer 40k: Inquisitor – Martyr:

Warhammer 40k: Inquisitor – Martyr is a very solid action/RPG with good graphics and controls, and a story that Warhammer fans should dig. Add to that some great voice work, that’s actually darkly funny at times, and you’ve got a pretty easy recommendation.
Our score: 86%

From our review of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana was my first experience with an Ys title, and it didn’t disappoint. The game offers excellent visuals, sound and localization, as well as a terrific story to keep you questing.
Our score: 87%

So those were our winners, but there was another game that captured the attention of one of our editors. That would be Sushi Striker, a Nintendo Switch game that kind of came out of nowhere.

From our review:

Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido is atypical, from its premise down to its gameplay. It’s bizarre in all the best of ways. It takes over a dozen hours to complete, and longer still if you want to reach every triumph. Collecting Sushi Sprites is fun, and testing out how their skills and sushi work together satisfies a strategic mind. I found myself matching sushi plates before bed, even after I’d put the game down. Some matches feel like they end in a loss just because the lanes didn’t line up right, rather than by your own fault, but build the perfect team of sprites and you’ll find control issues and bad luck fade away.
Our score: 80%

About Jason Micciche

Jason's been knee deep in videogames since he was but a lad. Cutting his teeth on the pixely glory that was the Atari 2600, he's been hack'n'slashing and shoot'em'uping ever since. Mainly an FPS and action guy, Jason enjoys the occasional well crafted title from every genre.
