SDCC 2018: Mego to make return with signing, figures coming this August

Once the greatest action figure line in existence, Mego is making its stunning comeback. But before but does, the company has an autograph session planned.

The World’s Greatest

Mego was a beast back in the 70s. The action figure line was an absolute monster that offered toys from both Marvel and DC, as well as many more licenses. Everything was of the same sculpting and quality, and came in the same scale.

For kids, it was a dream. Want Batman to team up with Spider-Man? No problem. They even looked like they were from the same toy line, because they were. And unlike series’ that mimic that theme today (like Mezco’s One:12 Collective), Mego wasn’t meant for collectors. And that means that it was relatively inexpensive.

After the line died out, it really never had a comparable replacement. As I mentioned, the One:12 is too high end. And while lines like DC Multiverse and Marvel Legends might work in a similar fashion, they pretty clearly aren’t made to be displayed together (though I have mine that way).

Fast forward to present though, Mego is finally making its triumphant return.

Old is new

So what is this new Mego? What kind of figures will the company offer? Will there be Marvel and DC offer gins? What additional licenses might they hold, and which ones are they going after? These answers to these questions are still mysteries. And it seems like Mego isn’t talking… at least not yet.

The company will be having an event at SDCC in a few weeks though, and that might shed some more light on what fans can expect. One thing we know for sure, is that it’ll have star-power.

The very first Mego action figure was not a superhero, but an NFL great. None other than NY Jets quarterback Joe Namath was the original Mego, and he’ll be on hand at Comic Con to greet fans, and sign some autographs.

He’ll be joined by “toy legend” Marty Abrams, who’s been involved with Mego previously. Both men will sign autographs at booth #830 on the show floor, on Friday July 20th. This is planned for the afternoon, from 1 to 2pm, but if you want to get one then you might want to get there early to queue up. These things have a habit of filing up fast at SDCC.

Expect to hear something about the toy line too, as Mego looks forward to an August 2018 (next month) launch. While you wait, why not check out the Mego Museum online?
