Sony announces discontinuance of PS+ freebies for PS3 and PS Vita

The freebie-train is coming to a halt. Sony has announced that PlayStation Plus free games will officially dried up for the PS3 and the PS Vita in a year.

It’s over Johnny

Now, first and foremost, I have to get this out of the way. PS4 free games are very much still supported by PS+ and will be hitting the service on a monthly basis. Going forward, it’ll be exactly what you’re used to on that front. It’s the PS3 and the Vita games that are seeing a big change.

In a letter that was sent out to PlayStation Plus subscribers this past weekend, Sony outlined the new plan as goes those all important freebies. The result is that support for legacy consoles will be dropping out of the service plan. This isn’t happening tomorrow though, as Sony says that the current plan will continue till March of 2019.

I’d probably stay on the lookout too, for some kind of change to the remaining free offerings. I can imagine that Sony fans will be none too happy to be getting less for the same amount of green.

So it’s probably the case that something else will be changing eventually. Whether or not that’s more free games for the PS4, I don’t know. I wouldn’t exactly bet on that though. I’d put my money on there being free themes or avatars or something.

And now of course, we’ll have to wait and see what Microsoft does. Remember that the Xbox Games with Gold plan is still serving up two free Xbox One and two free Xbox 360 games every month. What are the chances that that changes over the next 12 months?
