Alice VR brings sci-fi mystery to virtual reality

Looking unusually good  for a virtual reality game, Alice VR is a pretty unique title.

Alice in science fiction land

Looks cool right? Still, you’re probably asking yourself what looks ‘unique’ about Alice VR. Sure the game has some really nice graphics and a neat sci-fi setting, but there’s nothing all that different about it. Well, there actually is.

Not a ton is made of this in the press release, but Alice VR has a very specific reason why it’s called what it is, and that’s that it takes cues from Alice in Wonderland. While it’s certainly not set in the world of that classic fable, the game uses Alice in Wonderland as a base for some of its puzzles and themes. And in that way, it’s definitely unique.

As for the actual story here, well, developer Klabater seems to be putting something very cool indeed together.

A mystery among the stars

Separated from intergalactic confederation during the Great Colonial Wars, Speculo is one of the very few colonies where graphene, a vital resource for interstellar travel, can be mined. But that’s not all that lies in the sands. What has become of the original settlement, the mysterious city of Mirabilis?

Dazed by your recent awakening from cryosleep, and pressed by your ship’s all-controlling AI, it’s up to you to gather the resources needed to continue on your mission for the interstellar Corporation. But during your stay on Speculo, your decisions will shape the planet’s future.

That just sounds nifty. And lets be honest, as cool as VR can be, great games it does not have in any incarnation. Alice VR on the the other hand, looks to have pretty much all the elements that could make for a title with legs. Fingers crossed.

Alice VR hits the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, OSVR, and plain old PC this coming October.  Yes, that last bit means you can play out of VR with a gamepad. No word on just how you control your character while in the headset though.
