Star Fox 64 getting a Switch 2 remake this summer

Fox McCloud is back, and heading to the Switch 2 this summer, as Nintendo is preparing a full remake of Star Fox 64.

Star Fox 64? Nah, it’s just Star Fox now

Erupting out of Nintendo yesterday was the news that Star Fox is indeed coming back around. It’s about time too, since the company’s sci-fi property hasn’t been seen in a while. Rumors have been flying as of late though, and word picked up considerably after Fox McCloud’s appearance in the recent Super Mario Galaxy movie. Thanks to a special Nintendo Direct yesterday though, we’ve got the full rundown on the facts.

Firstly though, it isn’t a totally new game that’s coming up. Instead, Nintendo has remade the 64bit entry in the series. Renaming that game to simply Star Fox, the fresh take on the classic will be making its way to the Switch 2. Fans can start looking for it sooner than later as well, as it’ll launch on June 25th.

As always, words of wisdom from Peppy

So what can you expect from the revision? Well, for starters it looks a heck of a lot more modern. Star Fox looks to have some stellar visuals, and that includes makeovers for its animalistic heroes.

According to Nintendo, this new game is a “cinematic take” on the familiar N64 edition. And along with the graphics, fans can look for fully-voiced action and remade cutscenes. Does that mean the gibberish that Fox’ mercenary team usually spouts will be gone? Sure does. And whether you’re happy with that particular fact or not is up to you.

But that’s not all that’s new. Star Fox will also include 4v4 multiplayer, as well as Switch 2 ‘mouse’ joy-con 2 controls. The latter will figure into co-op play as well, meaning that one player can fly while the other shoots. As for coordination between the two, yep, expect GameChat to be in effect.

A new look at a classic

As mentioned above, Star Fox will look and sound a lot different than the game you might remember from the 90s. But if you remember the original fondly, you might still find plenty that feels familiar. That’s because the game’s level layouts are more or less intact.

That means that the alt-vehicles are coming back as well. Players will be able to take to the seas in their subs, and control tanks on the ground in specific stages. Oh, and also returning is the N64 controller. That’s right, the Switch 2’s available N64 controller peripheral can be used with the new Star Fox.
