Open-world RPG Game of Thrones: Kingsroad launches into Steam Early Access today

Game of Thrones fans can return to Westeros today, as Netmarble’s open-world role-playing title has arrived for Early Access.

All the way to King’s Landing

For a property that was as red hot as it was during the TV show’s run, Game of Thrones has been oddly quiet since. True, the prequel show is fairly popular, but it isn’t the phenomenon that the original was, and in terms of periphery entertainment like video games, it’s been all but silent. Enter developer Netmarble and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment though, and maybe that’s about to change.

Today sees the release of Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, an open-world RPG that will feature an original storyline that’s set in the world of HBO’s hit. The title will cast players in the role of a knight, sellsword, or assassin, and will feature an action tilt with a “skill-based combat system”, according to the press release.

Here’s a look at it in action:

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is Netmarble’s action-adventure RPG officially licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on behalf of HBO®. Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is a story-driven action-adventure RPG, bringing the world of Westeros to life with remarkable detail and never-before seen scale, following extensive research to faithfully recreate fan-favorite locations from the series as well as previously unseen lands. The battle for Westeros begins. Players can forge their own legacy and be immersed in intense battles, allowing them to experience the thrill of combat as if they were part of the “Game of Thrones” world.

Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment press release

If you’d like to walk the famed road and make your own way in Westeros, then you’ll be happy to know that Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is arriving later today (4pm EST) for Steam Early Access on the PC. Aside from that, the game will also be making its way to the Windows Launcher, plus iOS and Android handsets. Kind of cool too, it will offer a “a full cross-play experience across all supported platforms and devices”, according to Warner Bros.

And while there’s no release date just yet for the latter-mentioned editions, pre-registration is open now for either mobile platform.
