The Ghouls have arrived in Fallout 76, with a new update that lets players go feral

Promised since the arrival of the Fallout TV show, a new Ghoul-centric update has just dropped for Fallout 76.

Groovy

Remember when Fallout debuted on Amazon Prime and everybody was talking about how great it’d be to play as a Ghoul in Fallout 76? Well, guess what? That’s right, Ghoul Within is here for Bethesda’s open-world online title, and it lets players do just that.

Fans who download the free update will find that they can turn their human character into a Ghoul once they reach level 50 in the game. And if they do, they’ll also find that the title should change in a not so insignificant way for them.

Being a Ghoul isn’t the same as being human after all, and the world of Fallout 76 will present both new challenges and opportunities.

As a Ghoul, players will experience Appalachia in a unique new way. NPCs and factions interact differently with ghouls than they would with a regular Wastelander. When necessary, players can disguise themselves to conceal their Ghoulification for faction interactions. More than just community interactions, player ghouls are immune to radiation damage and can use it to heal as well as unlock unique abilities which can be used alongside 30 new Ghoul-specific Perk cards. Players will also have to keep an eye on the ‘The Feral Meter’ that replaces the normal ‘Hunger and Thirst meter’, with the risk (or reward) of going Feral if it depletes.

While the ghoul-life isn’t for everyone, players will have the option to revert to human once per character. If players choose to become a ghoul again, they will need to purchase a token in the Atomic Shop.

Glow of the Ghoul

Along with the above update, Bethesda has also dropped a fresh season of action for the multiplayer-centric game. Called “Glow of the Ghoul”, Season 20 introduces “new themed rewards and C.A.M.P. items”, according to the publisher.

And if you guessed that all of that was going to be Ghoul-related, you’d be right.

Season 20 has a full rundown on Bethesda’s site here, and is just the first of 2025’s lineup of content drops. Fallout fans can look for Fallout 76 to play host to Mothman Equinox in April, plus Spring is in Bloom when May rolls around, and more.
