Get the first look at Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, as Sega officially revealed the latest entry in the racing series at Sony’s State of Play.
Maybe he’s just running, like in the Flintstones
Arguments about Sonic the Hedgehog needing a car to race aside, the Sonic Racing series has been a pretty consistently good time. Sega doesn’t seem averse at all to try new things with the set of games either, which is probably a good chunk of what’s kept things fresh across its lifespan. That’s looking to be true yet again too, when it comes to the newly revealed Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
After a good deal of teasing, yesterday’s State of Play event finally saw the official reveal of the upcoming title, and an exploration of its “Travel Rings”. The major new addition to the gameplay, Travel Rings allow players to zip across “CrossWorlds” right in the middle of a race.
The results are even cooler than the name, as the game will seemingly send Sonic and crew across time and space, to radically different racing locations. Check it all out in the first gameplay trailer for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds brings back courses that include land, air, and sea terrain as well as the never-before seen Travel Rings feature that affects the race in real time by transporting racers to all new CrossWorlds during the race. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds also offers the largest roster of characters in any Sonic racing game, as well as a wide variety of customizable vehicles. Players can mix and match vehicle parts, powers, and abilities to create a customized racing experience suited to their gameplay style.
Sega press release
While Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds was revealed at the State of Play, fans who own non-Sony platforms needn’t fret. The game will be coming to just about everything, with the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC all listed.
Unfortunately the release date is a little more nebulous, with Sega simply saying that the title will be “coming soon digitally and physically”.
