The fallen kingdom of the Dwarves is the next expansion for The Lord of the Rings tabletop game, The One Ring.
Speak friend and enter
We have to admit that we’ve been unacceptably ignorant of the current state of the tabletop scene as goes The Lord of the Rings. Apparently, the legendary fantasy universe is still rolling with plenty of role-playing adventures, and with two games. Those, if you’re like us and you were unaware, would be Free League Publishing’s The One Ring and The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying, now in its fifth edition. If you’ve been playing right along too, you’re right on the edge of a brand new expansion pack.
This August will see the launch of Moria – Through the Doors of Durin, a new module that will focus on the lost kingdom of Khazad-dûm. Rings fans should know that quite well of course, since it played a pretty big part in The Fellowship of the Ring, with Gandalf and the rest of the Fellowship making their way through its dank and abandoned halls. Well, abandoned except for all the goblins. And a Balrog.
And most of that will presumably play into this new module, though it explores a time that some fans might be unfamiliar with. Moria – Through the Doors of Durin looks to be set more or less between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, so its action takes place before Balin made his way back to try and retake the stronghold.
According to Free League Publishing too, there will be plenty of content included for those Loremasters who want to plot out everything from a small-scale journey to imagining their own massive reclamation.
Drums, drums in the deep
For long ages, the great city of the Dwarrowdelf was the seat of Dwarven kings. Deep they delved beneath the roots of the mountains in search of Mithril, the fabled Moria-silver. Wonders they wrought there, by the light of crystal lamps. But a thousand years ago, Durin’s Bane arose and drove the Dwarves from their halls. The city fell into darkness, becoming an abode of Orcs, Goblins – and worse.
But now, there is hope! Countless Orcs perished at the Battle of Five Armies, and it may be the Halls of Durin lie empty once more, waiting to be reclaimed by those with the courage to face the long dark under the mountain. Maybe there are piles of treasure there, waiting to be claimed. Maybe Mithril still glimmers in the mines under Caradhras.
