Playing off of one of the newest sci-fi sensations, The Guide to the Orville will bring fans onboard for a personal tour of the title ship.
What happened to the Wilber?
Debuting in 2017, creator Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville was an instant hit. The sci-fi show featured an all-new universe in the spirit of classics like Star Trek, and was filled with action, starships, tons of lore from day one, and a plenty of humor. Now the title ship is about to get something else that genre fans are well-acquainted with, a full-on exploration in book form.
Titled The Guide to the Orville, Dark Horse will be crafting this new hardcover as a full deep dive into both the ECV-197 Orville, and much more. Written by the show’s co-executive producer and writer Andre Bormanis, it will reportedly delve into the background for the Planetary Union, the Orville’s senior staff, and the tech that went into the creation of the it.
Written from the perspective of Captain Ed Mercer, this in-universe tome will even have “personal log entries and commentaries on the fascinating and amazing worlds of our galaxy”, according to Dark Horse.
“This book was created for the fans, who have so enthusiastically supported our show since the very beginning,” said MacFarlane. “We want to invite them into the Orville universe at a new level, one that’s deeper and more personal—and with fascinating insights into the science and technology that could someday make a ship like the Orville possible.”

The Guide to the Orville will come in both standard ($44.99 USD) and deluxe ($99.99 USD) editions. The deluxe looks like it might be very much worth the investment too, as it’s set to ship complete with “an exclusive silver and black cover treatment, decorative slipcase, a hyper-detailed 27” x 40” cutaway poster of The Orville by celebrated technical illustrator Matthew Cushman, and a collection of four Planetary Union department patches.”
Clocking in at 192 pages, The Guide to the Orville hits bookstores on September 24th, 2024. Comics shops will get theirs the very next day on September 25th. Pre-orders are open now.
