From the ashes, here’s the future of X-Men comics

With the Krakoan era squarely in the rear-view mirror, Marvel is forging a new future for what will be a trio of X-Men teams.

Future state

So here we are, about to enter into yet another soft-reboot of Marvel Comics’ X-Men. The good news is that, if you didn’t particularly care for the aforementioned mutant nation, you might find a ton more to dig about what’s coming. On the flip side though, long time fans might still have some problems.

But let’s get back to the good stuff first, because it looks like the “From the Ashes” era is going to be way more familiar for those who are into a more traditional take on the mutant heroes. There are once again three teams, and the team that’ll be starring in “X-Men” looks like it’ll be populated by some of the greatest team members of all time. Look for Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Gambit, and Jubilee to round out that one.

Moving on, there’s the “Uncanny X-Men” team that looks to be led by Magneto and Cyclops. Fans will also find Magik, Psylocke, and Beast included on its roster, though they’re not alone. We can’t say we’re crazy about Kid Omega and Juggernaut being in there as well, but that’s the way it’s going to shake out.

Finally, there’s the “Exceptional X-Men” team, which will be the ‘newest’ in feel. Actually, that might be a very apropos word for it because it seems like more of a New Mutants-type book than one with the “X-Men” banner. Kitty Pryde will share the spotlight with Emma Frost there, with “new young mutants” Bronze, Axo, and Melee also in on the action.

As for the release schedule on all of this, don’t look for any X-onslaughts this era. X-Men #1 will be hitting the stands on July 10th (2024), with Jed Mackay and Ryan Stegman attached as the creative team, which will be followed up by Uncanny X-Men #1 on August 7th, from Gail Simone and David Marquez. Finishing out the collection, fans can look for Eve L. Ewing and Carmen Carnero’s Exceptional X-Men #1 on September 4th.

Here’s the official rundown:

X-MEN

  • Written by Jed MacKay
  • Art by Ryan Stegman
  • KRAKOA IS NO MORE…BUT THE X-MEN FIGHT ON!
  • From their new base in Alaska, the X-Men raise a flag of defiance! Join CYCLOPS, BEAST, MAGNETO, PSYLOCKE, KID OMEGA, TEMPER (formerly OYA), MAGIK and JUGGERNAUT as they assemble against new forces, battling for the destiny and philosophy of the mutant species. Mutant business is their business.
  • “It’s not just those three titles in this relaunch, there’s a lot!” MacKay shared at the panel. “[My X-Men title] is where we’ll see the first inklings of what the X-Men will look like in 2024. I’m very excited for you guys to see it when it comes out. If you look at that line-up, they’re a group of people who are not well suited to integrating into the world. And in these books, we’ll see what that means and what it looks like going forward.”

UNCANNY X-MEN

  • Written by Gail Simone
  • Art by David Marquez
  • OUTLAW HEROES ONCE AGAIN, THE X-MEN EMBARK ON A NEW MISSION!
  • Making themselves at home in the Big Easy, the X-Men protect a world that hates and fears them! Join ROGUE, GAMBIT, NIGHTCRAWLER, JUBILEE and WOLVERINE on explosive super hero adventures. Uncanny as ever, the X-Men are back to saving the day mutant-style!
  • “I think X-Fans are special in that we identify with having something different about us…and you’re going to feel that in this book, and what it means to have that thing about you that’s different, or exceptional. We go deep into the emotional part of that,” Simone told the crowd.
  • “David Marquez is the perfect artist for this book,” she continued. “He does amazing action, amazing character work, and he’s really excited about getting into the characters appearing in this book. I knew from the very first panel that this book was going to be super exciting and gorgeous. He just knows how to knock it out of the park!”

EXCEPTIONAL X-MEN

  • Written by Eve L. Ewing
    Art by Carmen Carnero
  • MUTANTKIND’S TWO GREATEST TEACHERS MOLD THE NEXT GENERATION OF X-MEN!
  • KATE PRYDE has returned home to Chicago following the war with ORCHIS. Having stepped away from the world of mutantdom, she is nevertheless called back into action as she crosses paths with a trio of new young mutants, BRONZE, AXO and MELEE, who clearly need training and guidance. Unfortunately for Kate, EMMA FROST thinks so as well!

About Jason Micciche

Jason's been knee deep in videogames since he was but a lad. Cutting his teeth on the pixely glory that was the Atari 2600, he's been hack'n'slashing and shoot'em'uping ever since. Mainly an FPS and action guy, Jason enjoys the occasional well crafted title from every genre.
