Hammerwatch II battles the dragon army this week on Switch and PS5

The king has been dethroned and a deadly army has been on the move in the brand new sequel to action RPG Hammerwatch.

Dropping the hammer

The original Hammerwatch was a pretty big indie hit with its pixely art style and fantasy co-op action. Now that world is back, thanks to Modus Games and developer Crackshell, though it’s looking a bit worse for wear thanks to a certain Blight the Horrible.

The warlord has sieged the land, from the Hammer Island, all the way through the mountains of Blackbarrow. Of course, that also means he’s deposed the King, who’s enlisted a team of heroes tasked with reclaiming the throne for him. If you guessed that those heroes are you and your buddies in some hot, co-op action, then you’ve got the idea.

The game’s action looks gloriously old school, wrapped up in a visual package that’s flat-out gorgeous.

Blight the Horrible’s dragon army is seizing the land you once called home and the dethroned King Roland has selected you as one of the mighty heroes he believes can restore his kingdom before it is plunged into darkness forever. Build a custom Herian Hero and choose between five distinct character classes: Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Wizard and Warlock before customizing your appearance and leveling up to unlock powerful new abilities and skills. Then, gather your closest warrior allies or journey alone to save the throne and put an end to Blight the Horrible’s takeover for good.

Modus Games press release

Take up arms against the dragon army this week, as Hammerwatch II has arrived for the PS5 and Switch. Along with the base game, a remastered version of the original Hammerwatch is out as well, plus a special double-pack that includes both games and “character color palettes, facial items, and the character voice pack”.

Looking to play elsewhere? Well no worries, though you’ll have to hang on for just a bit. Hammerwatch II will be heading to the PS4 and Xbox platforms some time next year.
