The return of the classic beat ’em up series finally has an official release date. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons comes home this July.
Brawling returns
On the list of side-scrolling brawlers, there are more than a few that stand out. The genre is one of the oldest in gaming after all, so the level of classics is pretty high. Though even with that, it’s probably safe to say that Double Dragon is right there with the best of the best.
But even so, it’s been a while since the property has been all that popular. Sure there were a few restarts here and there over the decades, but Double Dragon hasn’t had the premier name it once did.
Might that fortune be changing soon though? Modus Games and developer Secret Base sure hope so, as they prepare Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons for release in under two months time.
Announced a short time back, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons brings back the Lee brothers in the classic style. They’ll team with a now armed and dangerous Marian, and new character Uncle Matin for some single or co-op action.
Here’s the latest look:
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons recalls the series’ classic aesthetic with refreshed pixel art visuals, sporting updated-yet-faithful appearances for both returning heroes and villains and a stirring soundtrack that keeps players ready for the next fight. With unlockable bonuses, adjustable difficulty levels and optional permadeath and infinite modes, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is a robust revitalization of the series’ signature side scrolling action. With two-player local co-op, the action quadruples as you and a friend clean up the mean streets of NYC. Online co-op is planned as a post-launch update later this year.
Modus Games press release
As you can see there, along with the new look at the game in action, we have a release date to report. From the looks of things, you’ll be cleaning up the mean streets just as the summer heats up, as Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is set to arrive on digital storefronts as of July 27th, 2023.
You’ll be able to pick up a copy then for Xbox and PlayStation platforms, as well as the Switch and the PC.
