An Elseworlds tale in the classic DC Comics style, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is a supernatural Eldritch romp filled with reimaginings.
Heed the call
We’ve been showing off Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham for a while and the animated feature keeps on looking better and better every time. It’s a complete reimagining of the Bat-mythos, and now officially has the “Elseworlds” banner attached.
That of course, was a category recently brought back to life by the new DCU bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran. While they’re very much working on a cohesive universe, the two have also brought the classic comic book Elseworlds name into the film world for those movies that don’t fit into the overall plan.
Longtime comics fans will recall that Elseworlds was a DC staple in the 80s and 90s. It was so popular that it even had its own toy line from Kenner for a while, and spawned the vampiric-Batman stories, among others. But before it can even get applied to a DCU film, it’s making its way to animation with Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham.
This new feature casts the Dark Knight and his allies and enemies as Lovecraftian figures. And it looks like it includes all the supernatural mystery, horror, and action that term entails.
Here’s the latest drop of images, including a very mutated Penguin (and penguins).
Inspired by the comic book series by Mike Mignola, Richard Pace and Troy Nixey, Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham is a 1920s-based tale that finds explorer Bruce Wayne accidentally unleashing an ancient evil, expediting his return to Gotham City after a two-decade hiatus. The logic/science-driven Batman must battle Lovecraftian supernatural forces threatening the sheer existence of Gotham, along the way being aided and confronted by reimagined versions of his well-known allies and enemies, including Green Arrow, Ra’s al Ghul, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Two-Face, James Gordon and Bruce’s beloved wards. Prepare for a mystical, often terrifying Batman adventure unlike any other.
