Tempest 4000 to get a physical release on Switch

A faithful continuance of the classic arcade shooter, Tempest 4000 is about to bring blazing electric death to the Switch in a retail box from LRG.

Tempest 4000 has been around for a little while, and if you’re a fan of the classic Atari title, it’s definitely worth checking out. From developer Llamasoft and Jeff Minter, Tempest 4000 brings all of the series’ classic action back for a new generation.

It’s massively faithful to the original vision too, though of course adds in some fresh content. That comes by way of a brand new soundtrack, as well as original levels and “even more neon-lit madness”.

Tempest 4000 is a sequel to the classic arcade game Tempest®, and remains faithful to the original, while adding heart-pounding new music, updated levels, and even more neon-lit madness. Developed by Jeff Minter and his studio Llamasoft, Tempest 4000 sees that players once again take control of the Claw, a powerful spacecraft equipped to destroy deadly creatures and other obstructions with rapid-fire shots on vibrant geometric prisms. A hallmark of Minter’s style and creative genius, Tempest 4000 is a true explosion of lights, colors, and action all to the backdrop of a bass-boosted synth soundtrack, which includes familiar tracks from Tempest 2000.

Atari press release

Though the title has been on other platforms, it’s just this year made its way to the Switch. And it’s that version that will be getting a special boxed edition from Limited Run Games.

As usual with the publisher, this will be a limited availability item, and you probably won’t be able to just walk into any store to fund one (though LRG’s games to show up in Best Buys from time to time). So if you’d like to lock up a copy for yourself, the best way will be to hit the open-pre-order period, beginning today and running thorough January 1st, 2023.

Tempest 4000 is priced in at $34.99 USD, and is expected to ship 4-6 months after the pre-order period closes. So figure May/June of 2023. You can secure your copy here on LRG’s site.
