DC teams Sgt. Rock, zombies, and Bruce Campbell

No, you’re not dreaming, this is very real. DC Comics has brought none other than Bruce Campbell onboard for a Sgt. Rock adventure like no other.

Nazi zombies!

Video game fans are no strangers to the idea of Nazi zombies. We’ve seen ’em in games like Call of Duty and, uh, Nazi Zombies. But when it comes to comic books, well I can’t actually think of any that feature the risen Reich.

That’s to say, til now, as DC Comics is taking the theme and bringing it to its iconic Sgt. Rock. A pretty straight up military book in tears gone by, Rock and the men of Easy Company were created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert way back in 1959.

Now those very same WWII-era heroes will be making a comeback with a new 6 issue series from DC Horror. Yes, it’s something different for Rock, and something a little different for actor Bruce Campbell as well.

The horror icon will be coming onboard to pen the title, with artist Eduardo Risso on the pencils.

This fall, a DC icon returns… and so do the dead in DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead.

The story begins in Berlin, 1944. The Nazis are flanked on all fronts by the combined Allied forces, and defeat seems inevitable. In a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of the war, Hitler and his team of evil scientists create a serum that resurrects their dead soldiers, creating an army of the dead even stronger than they were in life.

Sgt. Rock, hero of the European Theatre, and his Easy Company find themselves dispatched into enemy territory to face off against the strangest, most horrific enemies they’ve encountered yet: Nazi Zombies.

DC Comics press release

Aside from 6 action/horror-packed issues, Sgt. Rock vs The Army of the Dead #1 will have a series of variant covers as well. Those will be led by something DC is calling a “Duffel Bag Gore” variant from Frank Quietly.

That cover isn’t shown here, though you can see some of the other pieces in the gallery above. Charlie Adlard, Francesco Francavilla, Chris Mooneyham, and Pia Guerra will all have very limited covers. And those, if you can find ’em, will all appear alongside the main cover art from by Gary Frank.

Look for issue #1 on the stands this September the 27th.
