Announced this past month, Spawn’s Universe is a new Image Comics series from Todd McFarlane. A much bigger, and brand new, world starts here.
Big time
As Image Comics’ catalog goes, actually as any ‘indie’ book goes, Spawn is impressive. Whereas other Image series’ from the company’s launch have long since folded, Spawn is still rocking and rolling. Of course, it does so alone, as one of the only maintained presences from the Image shared-universe left. Or at least, it did.
June is set to change all of that though, as Spawn gets ready to welcome in a second series, one that will bring new friends and foes for the undead hero.
“I’ve waited almost 30 years to be able to get to this moment. To deliver on ideas, I hope they will grow from this initial seed called SPAWN’S UNIVERSE #1 into a fully formed world populated with hundreds and hundreds of characters in the near future. The stage will be set with this book, and soon I’ll be launching into new monthly titles for the first time since 1992. I can’t wait to show comic readers all the crazy ideas in my head as well as opening up the floodgate to so many talented creators that have said they’d like to join me on this journey.”

It starts here
Spawn’s Universe #1 (yes, that’s the name) will feature 4 fresh tales. Each one will focus on a Spawn-flavored hero, who’ll then be spinning off into his or her own standalone title. That makes Spawn’s Universe a kind of hub for new Spawn titles, and as you’ll see you can expect to see some fan-favorites.
Spawn will be leading off in the book, with a story all to himself, but from there we get stories starring She-Spawn, Medieval Spawn, and Gunslinger Spawn to round things out.
- JIM CHEUNG – chapter with SPAWN
- BRETT BOOTH – chapter with GUNSLINGER SPAWN,
- STEPHEN SEGOVIA – chapter with MEDIEVAL SPAWN
- MARCIO TAKARA – chapter with SHE-SPAWN
As for the series’ coming out of these, they’ll be running with the titles of King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, and The Scorched. All of the above will be launching this year.
But before we get to those, you can expect a big debut for Spawn’s Universe’s first issue. That will include a load of variant covers. Artist J. Scott Campbell will be providing a set of 4 covers for the book which, along with Brett Booth and the standard illustration, will round out a six-pack of covers. But that’s not all, as McFarlane says there’ll be “over a dozen high profile artists” adding their depictions “of SPAWN and other fan-favorite heroes”.
The action starts this June with Spawn’s Universe #1, clocking in at 52 pages and price of $5.99 USD.
