Streets of Rage 4 shows off loaded roster

Dotemu and Lizardcube’s upcoming Streets of Rage 4 is packed with more than just new heroes. The entire past playable roster is here too.

A league of their own

It’s been a while, but the classic Sega Genesis Streets of Rage series is back. And from the looks of the visuals, it’s back in style. Last seen on the famed 16bit console, the side-scrolling brawler is returning with a modern look for Streets of Rage 4.

This time, players will be taking on the roles of two longtime characters, and also two new ones. But the fun doesn’t stop there, as developer DotEmu has just revealed that the entire past roster from the original trilogy of games will be present and ready for unlocking.

That’s not to say that they’ve been redone though. As you’ll see in the latest trailer below, these guys and gals are pure retro.

It’s kind of a testament to how great the classic games still look today, to see these characters in action. Even though they don’t have the new animation or cartoony style of SoR4, they still manage to look good.

Even cooler, legacy characters will have access to their original games’ special moves. So a character from SoR2 can call on the police for help, and a SoR3 fighter can “sprint or roll” through levels. All in all, this set of additions bings the game’s roster to 17 playables. And should you feel like getting even more throwback about it, you can even choose to play with the original 16bit tunes.

Though there’s no firm release date for the game yet, you can expect to be paying it soonish. Streets of Rage 4 will be available for the Xbox One, PS4, Switch, and PC some time this spring.
