Tossed in with all the Borderlands news as of late, is that Gearbox’ shooter threequel will be the latest in a growing list of Epic exclusives on the PC.
Probably one of the more hotly anticipated games of the year is Gearbox’ Borderlands 3. The loot-shooter is the third numbered game in a series that’s cooled a bit, but is still a major fan favorite. That’s true no matter the platform.
But while the title will be appearing on the Xbox One and the PS4 on the console side, the PC will be seeing some exclusivity. As with Metro Exodus and the upcoming Control, BL3 will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
That means that you won’t be able to buy and play the game over Valve’s Steam (or any other) digital storefront at launch. Notice the “at launch” part. That’s due to this being a timed exclusive. That seems to be a general strategy for Epic as they lock up big name exclusive after big name exclusive. If you want to play these games at launch, you’ll have to go Epic.
It’s a solid tactic, as it doesn’t tie down the publishers into infinity. And at the same time, it gives Epic the chance to pull some fans away from Steam. Valve’s platform has been the go-to for PC gamers over the years, and weakening it is no simple task.
Epic might be doing just that too, though it remains to be seen if they can keep it up. If they want to build further, the company will have to clean up its storefront, which isn’t the most user-friendly.
Borderlands 3 arrives on the 13th of September on the Epic Games Store, Xbox One, and PS4. Waiting for the Steam launch? That’ll be no sooner than April of 2020.
