Intellivision returns in 2020 with the company’s brand new Amico

One of the first video game consoles is back, or it will be in the next few years anyway. Intellivision is coming back to retail with the kid-friendly Amico.

The original, evolved

Intellivision has been gone for a long, long time and to see them come rolling back is honestly nice. It’s an interesting take too for their newest console too. They’re pretty clearly leaning their new console towards an exclusively all-ages audience. That’s something that no one else seems all that into, including Nintendo. Don’t forget that they’re accruing a decent amount of M-rated games for the Switch.

If you didn’t watch the trailer, the Amico is basically going to be all about exclusivity. The games that’ll appear are all exclusive to the platform. They will feature a good deal of remakes from iconic 80s platforms too, like the original Intellivision and Atari systems. Along with the remakes though, a slate of 20 new games will be hitting for launch.

Those include:

  • Miner 2049er
  • Super Burgertime
  • Bad Dudes
  • Caveman Ninja
  • Moon Patrol
  • R-Type
  • 10 Yard Fight
  • Lode Runner
  • Spelunker
  • Kung-Fu Master
  • MotoRace USA
  • Tropical Angel
  • Archon
  • T oeJam & Earl

Some very interesting names right there, including Toejam & Earl. There are some real classics on the list with that and others, like R-Type and Moon Patrol. Tempting stuff. I’m also really into those controllers, which seem super-cool.

Again, if you didn’t watch, the controllers are basically touchscreen with throwback Intellivision control-nobs. Oh, and if you want to play a game with more than two players, you can download an app that’ll turn any smartphone into… another controller. That, is awesome.

Of course none of this is exactly hitting retail tomorrow. Intellivision says that the Amico isn’t slated to arrive until 2020, so we’ve got a bit of a wait.
