Resident Evil 9 heads back to Raccoon City for a Requiem this February

The mysterious ninth entry in Capcom’s Resident Evil series is officially on the way for ’26, and it’s taking things back to the beginning.

They’re coming

It was March of 1996, and Capcom unleashed a very particular kind of horror on the video game multiverse. Of course, that was Resident Evil. Set in 1998, the survival horror game sent players into the fictional midwestern burgh called Raccoon City, or at least its outskirts. It was there that players met Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and the rest of the special S.TA.R.S. unit of the RCPD. It’s also there that they met the biological horrors that big pharma company Umbrella had been cooking up, zombies being the least of them.

The events of the original RE naturally led into Resident Evil 2 (and the contemporaneous part 3), which had an explosive ending, to say the least. The original trilogy was more or less capped with the US government dropping a nuke on the town, to try and rid the mainland of the T-virus infection. But that was just the beginning of a new set of games. Well, actually, several sets.

Since RE3, the series has rolled on with adventures on the high seas, in Africa, Spain, and other locales, most recently featuring Louisiana and Eastern Europe. Those were the settings for Ethan Winters and his starring roles in Resident Evil’s 7 and 8. But if you were expecting RE9 to be bring that set to a trilogy, think again.

Just revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025 late last week, Resident Evil: Requiem is that ninth (numbered) installment of the saga, and will star a new character, and a familiar location. FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft is being introduced (that’s a surname the should set off a few alarms), and the place?

Post-blast Raccoon City.

Unveiled at Summer Game Fest 2025, Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth and most immersive mainline entry yet in the iconic survival horror Resident Evil™ series, will launch on February 27, 2026, across PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Powered by RE ENGINE and harnessing the full power of modern consoles, Resident Evil Requiem delivers spine-chilling realism like never before, with complex character details like lifelike facial expressions, realistic skin textures, and even high-fidelity sweat droplets that are sure to keep players on the edge of their seats. Resident Evil Requiem takes the series back to the iconic Raccoon City, home of the biological disaster that shook the world, combining deeply terrifying aspects of psychological horror with pulse-pounding action that franchise fans know and love.

Capcom press release

While Grace is obviously a huge part of Resident Evil: Requiem, there are some rumors floating around that she’s not the only playable character in the game. You can use your imagination as to who’s rumored, but a certain ex-cop (with skills) is headlining the names.

Whatever the case, stay tuned, there’s plenty more to come about Resident Evil: Requiem, which is on the way to the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on February 27th, 2026.
