A long-awaited new era begins in Onimusha: Way of the Sword

You’re not dreaming, it’s finally back. Capcom has revealed Onimusha: Way of the Sword for release on consoles and PC in 2026.

This is the way

Rumored and wished for maybe more than any other title in modern gaming, Onimusha has been gone way too long. The action series debuted in 2001 to both critical and fan acclaim, as it brought a new dark fantasy take on ancient Japan, combining both heroic samurai and hideous demons.

Capcom has been mum on the property for years, and even a re-release of the first game a few years ago seemed to be a dead end. But that wasn’t the case at all apparently, as the publisher made the shock reveal at last night’s Game Awards that the classic was coming back for an all-new adventure in 2026.

Here’s the first look at Onimusha: Way of the Sword:

Onimusha: Way of the Sword takes place in Kyoto during the early Edo period. In this time of relative peace for Japan, Malice has befallen the ancient city. Twisted into an eerie and unsettling place, Kyoto has been infested by the demonic Genma. In the debut trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a lone samurai armed with the Oni Gauntlet engages in fierce, blood-soaked sword fights with these hellish creatures from another world.

Capcom press release

As absolutely phenomenal as that looks, there’s going to be a pretty big wait until you’re able to fire up a copy of Onimusha: Way of the Sword at home. The game is coming to the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam), but not until some time in 2026.
