DC Comics preps lineup of “Super Powers” variants for this summer

One of the best-loved action figure series of all time is about to get its own variant cover line, with DC Super Powers.

That is pretty super

Launched in 1984 from toy-maker Kenner, the DC Super Powers line of action figures immediately became a fan-favorite. The opening volley of figures included heavy-hitters like Batman and Superman, in a new (for the time) form-factor that included an impressive amount of detail, decent articulation, and kid-friendly action features.

While that original line didn’t last all that long, it made quite an impact. It’s really never wavered in terms of popularity with fans, and has even gotten a massive modern relaunch from McFarlane Toys. That’s proving to have upped the game considerably as well, with remakes, vehicles, and never-before seen characters getting Super Powers-style figures for the first time.

DC Comics isn’t set to rest on the revival either, as the publisher has revealed a slate of cover illustrations based on it. Hitting stores in August, the DC Super Powers will mimic the packaging of the now-classic toys, and mainly focus on characters (and variants) that we haven’t seen before.

Gracing the covers of Batman #151, Gotham City Sirens #1, Green Lantern: War Journal #12, Nightwing #117, Power Girl #12, Superman #17, The Flash #12, and Titans#14, the Super Powers variants will pack a hefty dose of nostalgia. According to DC Comics, each one have a ton of Easter Eggs (though that’s pretty obvious as well from the imagery), and all will hail from the artistic team of Jason Geyer and Alex Saviuk.

Geyer is a toy designer, as well as creator of Raving Toy Maniac, and both designed and “sculpted” the upcoming cover line. And as for Saviuk, he was only the lead artist for the original Kenner Super Powers figures back in the 80s. Think these are going to be something special for long time fans? We’d say so.
