Marvel Comics took the wraps off of some pretty big news today at Comic Con, including the return of fan-favorite artist Greg Capullo.
Kinda overshadows the actual comics
When does the return of an artist overshadow the actual comics that he’s set to work on? There’s a small group of modern talent that could probably fit that bill, but Greg Capullo is definitely right there with them. Capullo has worked on almost every major character in the art form over the last few decades, after all. He started with Marvel’s Quasar back in the early 90s, but went on from there to feature on books like X-Force and Spawn, before landing at DC and penciling the massive hit of a Batman run in the 2K’s.
Now back in the Marvel-fold, Capullo will be delivering a pair of covers with September’s Wolverine #37 and November’s Deadpool: Seven Slaughters #1. The Wolverine issue will be a variant that was previously kept secret, but the Deadpool will be a standard cover. And again, it’ll adorn the first issue of the upcoming Seven Slaughters mini-series.
If you’re not familiar with that, it sounds like it should hit the mark for fans:
Witness seven kills in seven days as fan-favorite Deadpool creators past and future, including co-creator Rob Liefeld, Gail Simone, Cullen Bunn and more, welcome readers to a week in the life of Wade Wilson, the best mercenary Marvel’s ever had (just ask him)! From facing off with an all-new rival killer to top secret assassinations to multiverse shenanigans, Deadpool has a lot of work to do in this blood-soaked oversized collection of seven stories as Deadpool takes one thrilling mission after the next!

But don’t go away quite yet, because there’s another big chunk of Marvel news, and it involves the nastier version of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man
Web of shadows
Marvel Comics hasn’t let anyone forget it, so you’re no doubt aware that it’s apparently the 10th anniversary of the Superior Spider-Man. The lengthy arc that saw Peter Parker’s mind taken over by his nemesis Doctor Octopus, was a somewhat polarizing one.
But even so, it’s definitely found a niche with some fans, and its repercussions seem to pop up every now and then. But with both Spidey and the Doc back in their separate bodies here in the modern Marvel age, wouldn’t a return of the faceted-eyed menace be out of the question? As it turns out, maybe not.
If you’re getting little agitated at that news, and we were so no worries if that was the case, it’s probably for naught. It doesn’t sound like we’re going to see a repeat of Peter getting replaced. But even so, Superior is indeed coming back at the same time, beginning with a one-shot in October and then cascading into an ongoing monthly. If that’s all the case, then it looks like there’ll be another (what’s that like 4?) Spider-Man swinging around NYC.
Here’s a somewhat cryptic rundown for you:
Retailers were also let in on the full scope of what Marvel Comics has in store for the 10th anniversary of Superior Spider-Man! Following October’s special SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN RETURNS one-shot, writer Dan Slott and artist Mark Bagley will reunite for a new SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN ongoing series! Spinning out of their current hit Spider-Man run, prepare for a SUPERIOR RECKONING as Spider faces a brand-new villain from his SUPERIOR past. As she fries New York with all the power of a living star, Doc Ock makes a life-changing discovery in this epic celebration of everything that made Spider-Man Superior. The new villain will make her first appearance in SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN RETURNS before unleashing her revenge on Otto, Peter, and more in the new series.
