Still in theaters in some areas, Paramount’s hit video game sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is also speeding onto digital formats and Paramount+.
Faster
One of the biggest ‘video game’ movies of all time, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was a big hit for Paramount. Building on the success of the original, Sonic 2 offered up more of what fans wanted, with plenty of new content.
While the movie kept the mix of live action and animation, it also introduced Knuckles, Tails, and a quest for the Chaos Emeralds. All that and an alternate movie poster that harkened back to the original video game Sonic 2 release, was more than enough to pull fans back into the cineplex.
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles (Idris Elba), in search of an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
Paramount. Pictures press release
While the movie only opened in theaters a few months ago, this is 2022, and that means it’s already coming to digital. Actually, check that, it’s out. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 should be out by the time you’re reading this, via Paramount+ for streaming, and digital formats for purchase.
Prefer physical boxes? Well, so do I, and that means I’ll be waiting til August 9th to grab Sonic 2 on 4K/Blu Ray disc. There are some ice bonuses to the physical launch too, with over an hour of bonus content including an animated short entitled “Sonic Drone Home”. That’ll have Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all included.
Oh, and while you’re here, don’t forget that Sonic Origins is coming up this summer too. A compilation of Sonic’s 16bit adventures, Sega’s newest offering will include bumped-up (visually) versions of the Genesis originals. That’ll be out on June 23rd for consoles and the PC.
