R.L. Stein takes the reigns of Marvel’s Man-Thing

All who know fear burn at the touch of the Man-Thing. Yes, Marvel Comics’ supernatural swamp creature is back, and this time he’s got writer R.L. Stein behind him.

The menacing Man-Thing

Attempting to recreate the formula that produced Captain America, biochemist Ted Sallis was transformed into the shambling creature known only as MAN-THING! Now, having recently regained his ability to speak, Man-Thing sets out on a journey to leave the swamps once and for all. But when an ancient and mysterious danger threatens reality, he will have to choose between his new life and the place he once called home!

I followed Man-Thing only a bit, and years ago, so I can’t say I’m super knowledgeable about the character. I had no idea though, that it was a stab at the super-soldier formula that turned Sallis into the creature. Man, that didn’t work at all. Like, spectacularly didn’t work.

In any event, with a talent like Stein on board, there’s little doubt that this new book has a chance at greatness. Stein knows creepy and macabre stories, and that’s a skill set that’s perfectly fitting here. From what I’ve read, Man-Thing has always been more that kind of scary than the straight-up horror kind.

I can’t believe I’m saying this about a Man-Thing book, but I’m excited. Marvel’s newest creep-fest is looking like one to watch.
