3D Realms’ Phantom Fury blasts onto Steam today

At last, Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison is back in action, as 3D Realms and Slipgate Ironwork’s heroine returns with Phantom Fury.

Phantom no more

Years after the release of popular retro-shooter Ion Fury, Bombshell is indeed back in action with today’s launch of Phantom Fury. In this new adventure, developer Slipgate Ironworks’ bumps the series’ looks from the Build Engine era of FPS’ to a little later in the 90s. The narrative follows suit as well, with a story that picks up its action years after the close of its prequel.

Bombshell comes complete with a cyborg arm now, and has her sights set on an artifact called the Demon Core… oh, and she’s decidedly not in a good mood. Phantom Fury‘s road trip will take the game’s hard-hitting action across the US, and set Shelly in the sights of some dangerous creeps. Good thing she’s got that Swiss-army-arm and a series of 20 weapons to get to work with.

“We thank the fans for waiting patiently as Shelly returns for the next chapter of her action-packed journey,” said Frederik Schreiber, CEO of 3D Realms. “Following the positive reception from our presence at PAX East, we’re eager to share Phantom Fury’s madcap mayhem with players worldwide.”

3D Realms press release

Of course 3D Realms promises loads of action with Phantom Fury, but the publisher also says fans should be on the look out for “adrenaline-fueled sequences straight out of an action film”. Among those listed are “high-stakes helicopter showdowns, avoiding deadly fire and raining bombs down on foes”. Naturally there’ll be a series of boss battles too, so head’s up.

First-person shooter fans are able to check out Phantom Fury from today, as the game is available on Steam for the PC. As for the upcoming console editions, those are still in the works, and won’t be along til some time in 2025.
