“Saturday Morning” variants hitting X-Men and Venom titles this summer

Ah the halcyon days of the weekends of yesteryear, who could forget watching Marvel’s Saturday morning slate of X-Men and… Venom?

I mean, but not really though

Marvel Comics has, in decades gone by, had a ton of great cartoons. TV sets the world over played host to the likes of Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, The Incredible Hulk, that weirdo X-Men special that had one episode, and one of the best times for comic-book-cartoons ever (and I’m not kidding) – the 90s. That was as legit as it got for the art form, with an interconnected universe of Marvel stuff that was never surpassed.

But as great as all of that stuff was, the summer’s latest variant cover push won’t play off of any of it. That’s not to say that it’s still not kind of a neat idea, it’s just that the publisher has such a great history with animation, that it would have been nice to have seen some homages to that.

It’s not to be though, so let’s get back to reality for a moment, and talk about what is coming. A cool idea in its own right, Marvel’s Saturday Morning Variant Covers will feature characters and stories as though they had appeared in ads for classic ‘toons.

Confused? Take a look, it’ll explain better:

Marvel Saturday Mornings are back! This summer, reminisce about the mornings spent in front of your TV set wtching your favorite cartoons with a new collection of covers by acclaimed artist Sean Galloway! Inspired by classic TV ads of decades past, these new SATURDAY MORNING VARIANT COVERS capture the exuberant energy and vibrant aesthetic of iconic children’s programming with a modern twist. Many comic fans have fond memories of their favorite Marvel heroes making it to the TV screen in hit media adaptations, and these new pieces celebrate that tradition with takes on the X-Men, Avengers, Venom, and more.

Marvel Comics press release

Kinda neat, right? Well if you think so too, then you might want to get these bad boys pre-ordered, as they’ll be shipping this summer to comic shops. Scroll down for the full schedule.
