Snake Eyes to make early debut on home video

Coming out of a theatrical run that was less than ideal, Paramount and MGM’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is hitting home video formats soon.

Silent master

Unlike with a lot of comic book and cartoon heroes, a Snake Eyes-centric film is not an easy task to pull off. It really isn’t. Though the character is a fan favorite, and hugely popular, he’s actually got a lot going against him when it comes to something like a movie.

For one thing, he’s horribly scared from his work as a military commando. So he can’t ever remove his mask. Then he’s also mute, also having lost his ability to speak. Take those two things and add them together and you have a main character that wouldn’t be all that attractive to very many Hollywood types.

So what’s the solution? Well, if you’re Paramount and MGM, it’s more or less to toss out the character’s established back story and create something almost totally new. Does that fly with fans? Apparently not.

Released in theaters on July 24th of this year, Snake Eyes only took in around 24 million USD in terms of box office. Even with the pandemic keeping some out of movie houses, that’s pretty low. Especially for a summer popcorn movie/action flick.

Still, if you’re a fan of martial arts and big fight scenes, and don’t really care about the ‘canon’ history of Snake Eyes, it might be worth your time.

Discover the origins of the iconic G.I. JOE hero, SNAKE EYES (Henry Golding), in this action-packed, edge-of-your-seat adventure. Welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir-apparent, STORM SHADOW (Andrew Koji), SNAKE EYES joins the battle against the terrorist group COBRA. Pushing him to the limits, SNAKE EYES will become the ultimate ninja warrior. But, when past secrets are revealed, his honor and allegiance will be tested – even if that means losing everything he has been fighting for. Also starring Úrsula Corberó as BARONESS and Samara Weaving as SCARLETT.

Action, at home

So with the low theatrical take in mind, an early release for home video formats might be a solid idea. As you can see, that’s what we’re getting with a launch that’s right around the corner. Is Snake Eyes the fastest big studio release to ever hit home? It’s probably in the running, since it’ll be about a month (more if you want a physical disc).

As of now, Snake Eyes is set to arrive on digital and streaming services… tomorrow. August 17th, 2021 is the date when you’ll be able to check it out, via both Premium Digital and Premium Video-On-Demand services. Again though, if you want that physical box on your library shelf, you’re going to wait a little longer.

Boxed editions of the film are scheduled to arrive on October 19th, so about 3 months post-theater run. And that’ll be for the full spectrum of formats; 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and a 4K steelbook collector pack.

SNAKE EYES: G.I. JOE ORIGINS 4K Ultra HD

Fans can enjoy the ultimate viewing experience with the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, which includes access to a Digital copy of the film, or the 4K Ultra HD SteelBook Combo, which includes an Ultra HD Disc with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos and a Blu-ray Disc with Dolby Atmos, as well as access to a Digital copy.  Both 4K Ultra HD offerings include the following bonus content:

  • Morning Light: A Weapon with Stories to Tell – Discover the secrets of Snake Eyes’ legendary sword, Morning Light, in this all-new short film
  • Deleted Scenes – What you didn’t see in theaters
  • Enter SNAKE EYES – Find out what it took to bring the iconic hero’s origin story to life
  • A Deadly Ensemble – Meet fan-favorite heroes, villains, and new characters in the G.I. JOE franchise
  • Arashikage – Dive into the elite ninja warrior world of the Arashikage clan

SNAKE EYES: G.I. JOE ORIGINS Blu-ray

The SNAKE EYES: G.I. JOE ORIGINS Blu-ray is presented in 1080p high definition with Dolby Atmos. The Blu-ray includes access to a Digital copy of the film as well as the bonus content detailed above.

SNAKE EYES: G.I. JOE ORIGINS DVD

The DVD includes the feature film in standard definition.

In addition to all of the above, there will also be a gift set, if you’re thinking of holiday time. If you’re buying for a Joe fan, you might want to consider the upcoming 3-Movie giftset. In that, you’ll find Snake Eyes, with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation added in. So a cool little package deal there.
