McFarlane launches King Spawn, 2nd ongoing Spawn title

Not to be confused with a replacement for the long-running Spawn, King Spawn will debut the second monthly for the demonically-powered hero.

Here he comes, King Spawn

“My goal is to give fans twice as much SPAWN titles to read than they had before… and at the lowest price possible! And by the end of the year, there will be a Spawn-related book available for fans every week of the month,” said Todd McFarlane, SPAWN Creator. “We will be introducing new heroes and villains along with classic characters as we expand the SPAWN Universe into the future. “

Yes, that’s a big statement. A Spawn title every week of the month? Not that all of those will be focusing on the big guy himself, but that’s a lotta Spawn. Though you do have to take a few things into account when thinking about the coming Spawn-deluge.

For one thing, Spawn has been around since the beginning of Image Comics, back in ’92. He’s still popular today, and is basically the only one of the original Image Universe heroes still in a monthly book. That says volumes. And unlike many other heroes in comicdom, Spawn remains pretty thematically similar to the original vision.

Worth mentioning too, is that the recent Spawn’s Universe one-shot that intro’d all of this new content is monster seller. The book moved over 200 thousand copies, and that was about a month ago. So not only is there an audience for all of this, but it’s hungry for more.

A giant among books

And if you’re one of those fans, then you’re going to be pretty happy with what McFarlane is cooking up with King Spawn. For one thing, the book will see the return of “one of the all-time classic fan-favorite villains from the original series”. Then there’s the talent on board. It’s pretty great.

An all-star creative team will help launch this series, including writers Sean Lewis, Todd McFarlane, and artists Javier Fernandez, Brett Booth, Philip Tan, Stephen Segovia, Todd McFarlane, and Marcio Takara. Along with famed cover artists Greg Capullo, Sean Gordon Murphy, Puppeteer Lee, David Finch, McFarlane, Booth, and a few more still to be announced.

As you might imagine with a cast like that, King Spawn #1 is a beast of a book. The first issue of the new series clocks in at a gigantic 56 pages, of course “with stunning art and action-packed storytelling”.

A total of 6 covers are planned for the launch, with art from the above-named “cover artists”. The book will be hitting digital distribution platforms like Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play day and date with the physical edition. And if you’re anything like me, it’s the latter edition that you’ll be targeting. Can’t beat that new-comics smell.

King Spawn #1 hits stands on August 18th, and will be $5.99 USD.
