Baldur’s Gate III announced by Larian

At long last, a third Balder’s Gate title in on the way. Even better, it’s from Larian. That’s the same studio that’s behind the lauded Divinity series.

The gate is open

As teasers go, this one’s a doozy. No, it’s not in-game, but the footage is flat-out gorgeous and sets the stage for an extremely dark tale for the grand return for one of the greatest PC RPG’s of all time – Balder’s Gate.

“Baldur’s Gate means so much to so many people. It’s a great responsibility but I think we’re ready for it,” said Swen Vincke, Creative Director at Larian Studios. “We’re all about creating reactive, systemic worlds that respect player agency and having a chance to apply our team’s skillset in a universe as rich as Dungeons & Dragons is a lot of fun. We’re working very closely with Wizards to bring an unprecedented level of immersion to the realm of Faerun and I can’t wait to show the world what our team cooked up.”

“Partnering with Larian, a studio that combines a remarkable history of critically-acclaimed titles with a genuine passion for one of the most iconic locations in Dungeons & Dragons, has been a terrific experience,” said Chris Cocks, President of Wizards of the Coast. “We believe fans of the Baldur’s Gate saga – and even those new to the series – will be thrilled to step into this epic story.”

The classic returns

If you’re not pumped for this one just from reading the above… well I would have to guess that you’re not a fan. Because if you are, then that’s probably all you have to see/read to get you itching to dig back into the world of the Forgotten Realms.

Of course, things will be a little bit different this time around. Marian says that the new game will have “current D&D mechanics and spells”. So Balder’s Gate III will very much be in line with the current tabletop game.

The development house also promises a “rich narrative” with “unparalleled player freedom, high-stakes decisions, unique companion characters and memorable combat”. This is also set to be Larian’s biggest production ever, according to the company, and it will support both single player and co-op play.

There’s no release date as of yet, but we do know that Balder’s Gate III will be hitting the PC and the Google Stadia when it arrives.
