“Action Driving” returns in EA’s Need for Speed Payback

One of the longest running racer series’ around, Need for Speed is back, and it’s time for Payback.

The house always wins

We knew this one was on the way for a while, but EA has finally seen fit to take the wraps off.  Developer Ghost Games is behind Payback, which sounds like it’ll be heavy on the action, and just maybe shake up the genre a little too.

Need for Speed returns this year to challenge what players expect from racing games,” said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer. “We’re still delivering everything our fans love about the franchise – the deepest customization, an impressive roster of cars, intense races and open world pursuits – but with Need for Speed Payback, we’re bringing together all those elements in an all new blockbuster driving experience. From the story, to the different characters you can drive as, to the varied missions, to the edge-of-your-seat moments, this is our vision for what action driving entertainment means today.”

A racer with character

Giving a racing title a personality isn’t easy. It sounds like Ghost Games is giving it a real shot though. Payback will star a trio of characters “reunited by a quest for vengeance against The House, a nefarious cartel that rules the city’s casinos, criminals and cops.”

So who’s in this trinity?

  • Tyler, the Racer
  • Mac, the Showman
  • Jess, the Wheelman

Staple driver-types, but ones that could be lot of fun. I’m hoping that you’ll have to switch between them as you play, tailoring your character by mission-type.

As you might imagine too, your quest to unite the underworld will include plenty of customization. Ghost is promising the deepest options yet in NfS, and you can even bet on your own performance. So basically, you can make out like a bandit if you’re confident you can win a race. Or, uh… the opposite.

Pre-orders are up

This is EA we’re talking about here. So you had to know that there would be pre-order goodies to be had. And indeed there are with a five-pack of cars called the Need for Speed Payback Platinum Car Pack up for grabs. Easy one of the following will have “exclusive” Platinum Blue Tire Smoke too, so you can really show up the competition.

And the vehicles are:

  • Nissan 350Z 2008
  • Chevrolet Camaro SS 1967
  • Dodge Charger R/T 1969
  • Ford F-150 Raptor 2016
  • Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport 2016

Sound good? Then you might also be interested to know that buyers of the Need for Speed Payback Deluxe Edition will be able to play three days early, and get “exclusive customization items such as the Deluxe Edition license plate and NOS color, in-game discounts, Rep bonuses, everything the Platinum Car Pack has to offer, and more.”

Need for Speed Payback is set to pull onto the Xbox One, PS4, and the PC (by way of Origin) on November 10th.
