Nintendo posts financial statement on earnings through third quarter

It’s that time of the year again. Nintendo has recently posted its financial statement, highlighting earnings from December 2012 to 2013.

There has been some good news and not so good news from this statement. First, the good; The Wii U has managed to sell over 5.86 million units of hardware, and 29.37 million units of software. The Nintendo 3DS is currently sitting at 42.74 million hardware sales, and 152.29 million software sales. The holidays gave the Wii U a much needed boost, even if Nintendo missed the projected mark. The 3DS missed the projected mark as well, but this is probably due to Nintendo over-estimating it, rather than the 3DS under-performing. Which is understandable considering the momentum the platform has maintained. Wii U managed to generate a gross profit of 149.2 billion yen, Now for some not so good news; Nintendo experienced an operating loss of 1.5 billion yen.

Despite some strong sales, the losses still exceeded the profit. According to Nintendo, part of this loss was due to the currency exchange, which has affected a number of Japanese and Korean companies over the years. Nintendo has addressed its approach going forward in the investor briefing they recently had today. Aside from president of Nintendo Satoru Iwata taking a pay cut, they plan to change up their strategy in order to best meet the new challenges they’ve experienced.
