Doom 64 re-release officially delayed to March 2020

We pretty much knew this was coming, but here’s the official word that Doom 64’s re-release won’t arrive until March of next year.

Hell arrives… in March

The initial release of the current Doom series’ sequel is just around the corner. Bethesda had originally set that for November. Now we know though, that that title won’t be landing on consoles and the PC till March of next year. And now Doom 64’s re-release will be joining it.

As I mentioned above though, we all should have seen that one coming. Along with the delay, Doom 64 had been announced as a free incentive to pre-order Eternal. It was kind of a nice little apology for keeping fans waiting a little longer.

But with that plan in place, there was little hope that the original release of that game would stay put. Now we know that’s indeed the case. Bethesda has officially announced that Doom 64 won’t arrive until March 20th, 2020.

The game will come with both versions of Doom Eternal, though will be a part of the Rip and Tear pack in the Deluxe Edition.

DOOM 64 – originally released on March 31, 1997 for Nintendo 64 – is included in the pre-order of the base game as well as the Deluxe Edition as a part of the Rip and Tear Pack. The Rip and Tear Pack also includes the DOOT Revenant player skin, the Throwback Shotgun Weapon skin, and the Cultist Base Master Level, a remixed version of the campaign level “Cultist Base,” with new challenges and surprises.
With more than 30 action-packed levels, DOOM 64 is back and better than ever, giving newcomers and lifelong fans alike a new opportunity to rip and tear.

What about the Switch version?

There is one interesting note in all of this. That being that Doom Eternal doesn’t have a release date for the Nintendo Switch right now. Originally it was going to release day-and-date with all the other platforms, but the delay of game has sent the Switch’s Doom Eternal into a holding pattern. So does that mean you can pre-order and still be playing a free copy of Doom 64 on the 20th of March? Nope.

Bethesda says that, if you pre-order Eternal on Switch, you’ll still have to wait till that game launches on Nintendo’s platform to play your free copy of 64. That’s not to say that Doom 64’s eShop release will see further delay though. It’ll still be available to buy on the 20th for Nintendo gamers, you just won’t be able to play your gratis copy if you pre-ordered Eternal.

Obviously this is set up to be the case because it’d be too easy to pre-order Doom Eternal, get Doom 64 for free, then cancel the pre-order. Nevertheless it still kind of leaves a bad taste.
