Catch a preview of DC’s Batman/Static: Beyond

A meeting of the formerly-animated superstars is incoming. DC Comics is about to present Batman/Static: Beyond.

Batman and Static head into the Beyond

Some of DC Comics’ biggest 90s-era animated stars are about to meet in an Elseworlds tale. Those would be Batman and Static, who’ll be paired in the upcoming Batman/Static: Beyond mini-series. And if you remember the age of the DC Animated Universe fondly, then you’re going to want to check out the preview we’ve got for you

The book will debut this November, and will bring a few pretty big guest stars along with it. Included will be Milestone’s Icon, as well as the future-version of the Man of Steel himself, Superman. Those powerhouses make perfect sense too. Virgil Hawkins (otherwise known as Static) is a bit older in the time of “Beyond”, and a member of the Justice League. And it’s as the hero’s about to help bring Earth into an alien confederation of worlds called the Cooperative, that events kick off.

As for the creative team, fans can look for writer Evan Narcisse to be at the helm of this one, with Nikolas Draper-Ivey providing the art.

In the debut issue, Terry McGinnis patrols the neon-lit streets of Neo-Gotham while Virgil Hawkins pioneers a technological revolution with thelaunch of the Q-Wave Energy Grid. As Earth prepares to join a powerful interplanetary alliance called the Cooperative, the Justice League Beyondstands ready to usher in a new era of peace. But when a mysterious villain triggers a global blackout, the planet’s future hangs in the balance. Withtechnology crippled and chaos rising, Static and Batman Beyond must forge an unlikely alliance and take a grounded approach to saving the worldbefore it’s too late.

Insight from the creative team

For longtime DCAU fans, Batman/Static: Beyond is looking like a tale to keep an eye on. The title brings the two title heroes back together for the first time after their team-up in then pages of Milestone Comics. They’re not alone though, as there’ll be a host of well-known own accompaniment.

Other than Superman and Icon, a full Justice League will be there too, that Incudes the DCAU’s Warhawk. Aside from the human/Thanagarian, there’s also a Flash, Micron, and Big Barda, who’s looking the same as always. It’s good to be a New God.

The story, as you might’ve seen above, will play heavily off of not just futuristic themes. But that will include a commentary on technology in general. And by that, we mean humanity’s continued reliance on it for just about every facet of daily life.

Take a read through the shared interview snippets below to get a better feel for what’s on the way, when Batman/Static: Beyond #1 hits stores next month.

“I loved the dynamic Nik set up between Static and Batman in the Milestone 30th Anniversary Special where these characters first teamed up with each other,” said Evan Narcisse, “and the most exciting part of this new project has been exploring how different Terry and Virgil are from each other.”

“This story is intended to be a commentary on our overreliance on technology and the imminent dangers becoming complacent and too comfortable using AI to substitute our own imagination and human ingenuity,” continued Nikolas Draper-Ivey. “We now use our watches to find our phones, we use our phones to connect to everything else. We don’t rely on our own memories. We rely on technology to remember for us. That deeply concerns me. I worry that we are getting to a point where if all these things were to be suddenly taken away from us in an instant—at the rate we’re going now, humanity will be at a huge disadvantage.”

“Static is a former teen hero who grew up to take on even more responsibility for his city and the larger world, while Terry is still figuring out how to do those things in his own way,” added Narcisse. “Terry’s still a high school student but he’s also got the weight of the Batman mantle and the expectations that come with it as key parts of his life now. As an adult member of the Justice League, Virgil’s at a different part of his journey. But he’s driven by an adolescence where systemic injustice changed what it meant to live in his hometown of Dakota. Their approaches to making the world a safer, more just place are extremely different. That difference energizes the big question they have to deal with: can they learn to work together during a critical moment when everything they’ve taken for granted has fallen apart? The whole creative team is going to try and answer that question in Batman/Static: Beyond with a story where deep emotions collide against the backdrop of an uncertain future.”
