The cult favorite, barbarian hero from the 80s is back. A wholly new reimagining of Deathstalker is in theaters now.
A HERO!
If you missed it last week, it’s true, Deathstalker is back. Originally from Roger Corman, the sword-swinging barbarian series has made its return to theaters for the first time in ages. The new film plays off of the originals with its theme and heroes, but looks to reboot the tale.
Hailing from The Void and PG: Psycho Goreman director Steven Kostanski, the movie stars Daniel Bernhardt in the title role. At his side is the wizard Doodad, voiced by Patton Oswalt, for an adventure that’ll take him face to face with the full range of sword and sorcery threats.
Much like the originals, Kostanski’s Deathstalker battles humans, monsters, and beasts alike. And in keeping with the originals, he does do in ‘practical’ form. While there’s definitely some stop-motion and computer effects happening, the majority of the monsters look to be real costumes.
If you’re a fan of Deathstalker, or any classic movies of its ilk, that can only be a good thing.
In Deathstalker, the Kingdom of Abraxeon is under siege by the Dreadites, heralds of the long-dead sorcerer Nekromemnon. When Deathstalker recovers a cursed amulet from a corpse-strewn battlefield, he’s marked by dark magick and hunted by monstrous assassins. To survive, he must break the curse and face the rising evil. Death is just the beginning… of great adventure!
SHOUT! Studios press release
From SHOUT! Studios in the US and Raven Banner in Canada, Deathstalker is out now, and in select theaters.
Deathstalker rocks
At the close of the trailer, you might’ve noticed some heavy-duty auditory credits. Composer Bear McCreary is among those. Genre and sci-fi fans should recognize his name immediately, as he’s been composer for a number of classic shows like Battlestar Galactica, Black Sails, and Outlander. Along with him too, there’s a member of rock-royalty, with Guns N’ Roses’ own Slash.
Slash has been involved with a few Deathstalker projects as of late, including the comics and now the film. A big fan of the hero, he’s also a part of the official music video. Fresh out of the gates, that video stars the legendary guitarist, plus the talents of the aforementioned McCreary, plus Brendan McCreary and Chuck Cirino.
The result? Lots of hard rocking and some glimpses of the big-screen action.
