The epic continues in DOOM: The Dark Ages, as ID Software delves into the gameplay, story and more behind the upcoming FPS.
That’s pretty metal
If you missed it, today was the Xbox Developer Direct, which highlighted a few key titles coming up here in 2025. While all of the games shown looked sharp, and there was a nice surprise with Ninja Gaiden 4, it’s pretty much DOOM: The Dark Ages that stole the show.
A direct prequel to the recent DOOM rebirth in 2016, DOOM: The Dark Ages follows the Slayer when he joined the Argent D’Nur in their crusade against the forces of hell. As that description would hint at too, this isn’t a game that takes place on any human world, instead looking to expand the DOOM universe, bringing it to all new alien worlds. From the looks of everything we’ve seen thus far, the result is a mashup of medieval themes, sci-fi weaponry, and of course lots and lots of heavy metal.
We got a look at all of that in today’s new behind the scenes video, but much more as well. ID went into some of the finer points of DOOM: The Dark Ages, calling it a return to form. We found that interesting indeed, as it means the Slayer will be less “fighter jet” and more “tank”.
This will not be a game that’ll have players running during battles, and sticking ‘n’ moving. No, DOOM: The Dark Ages is all about “stand and fight”.
As the super weapon of gods and kings, players will step into the blood-stained boots of the DOOM Slayer, exploring never-before-seen realms, unlocking powerful weapons of mass destruction and conquering some of the largest demons ever seen in a DOOM game.

Otherworldly options
Massive demons, open-world battlefields, 30 story mechs, and laser-winged dragons? Yeah, DOOM: The Dark Ages is looking like a title we can’t wait to get our hands on. Fortunately the game is coming up pretty darn quick, with a May 15th release locked in for the Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.
As you might imagine too, pre-orders are open now, with several versions for you to pick from. Of course there are the basic editions for all of the platforms above, and those are available both digitally and physically. On top of those though, there’s also the Premium Edition and Collector’s Edition.
Buying either of those will net you a two day early play window, plus the campaign DLC, “Digital Artbook and Soundtrack, and the Divinity Skin Pack.” That’s where they diverge though, with the Collector’s Edition gong above and beyond with a mighty set of physical collectibles.
Those include:
- 12” DOOM Slayer Statue (PVC)
- Metal Red Key Card Replica
- SteelBook® Case
- Game Disc + All Premium Edition Content
