Bringing what looks to be classic action/RPG mechanics back to PC fans, Eko Software’s Dragonkin: The Banished is coming up.
Flame on
Are you familiar with Eko Software? Depending on what kind of fan you are, you might be, since Eko was the studio behind Warhammer: Chaosbane. That title was the first aRPG to feature Games Workshop’s venerable fantasy license, and was a recent favorite in the genre here at BG.
This time eschewing a license, Dragonkin: The Banished is a wholly new property from Eko and publisher NACON, though it once again will feature a brutal fantasy realm. Players will be able to venture forth from The City, a hub that represents the last holdouts of humanity, and into a world that’s packed with hordes of foes and challenges to overcome.
In this original adventure, which can be played alone or in co-op with up to 4 players*, players choose one of the four available heroes** with their own abilities and combat techniques, and set off to explore several environments, each with its own monsters, resources and challenges. Gradually, they develop their character through a skill grid called the Ancestral Grid. This is a truly unique mechanic that requires players to build their own skill tree by strategically placing Fragments obtained during gameplay, juxtaposed with multiple modifiers. Each hero has their own grid that offers endless combinations to create a truly unique character and combat style.
Another major element of the game is The City. As humanity’s last bastion, this city is a true evolving hub allowing players to upgrade their equipment, interact with NPCs with unique abilities, and customize their experience with visual improvements.
NACON press release
As mentioned above, Dragonkin: The Banished isn’t quite ready for a full release just yet, but it is coming to Early Access on the PC quite soon. Genre fans can look for that launch on March 6th, 2025, via Steam.
