Prepping another terrific looking book is Insight Editions, with Marvel Comics: The Variant Covers. Get ready for a trip through comics history.
Variating
Comics fans have probably gotten used to seeing the phenomenon known as the variant cover, but once upon a time it wasn’t so commonplace. Actually, there weren’t any really.
But that all changed in the late 80s. The decade brought many changes and new gimmicks to the industry, but the alternate or variant cover is one of the longest-lasting. After all, it’s still not only around now, but it used liberally by all the bigger publishers.
Some of them tend to be even better than the standard cover too. And it’s particularly cool to get to pick from covers for the book you’re about to buy. Unless you’re a completionist, in which case it can be insanity-producing.
But taken on face-value, variants are one of the many neat little aspects to the industry. And now publisher Insight Editions is set to celebrate Marvel Comics’ rich history with them.
That comes by way of Marvel Comics: The Variant Covers. A new book from Insight collects 400 of the “finest and most-famous” variant covers to see publication. Not just imagery though, the book will tell the tale of the covers will accompanying “interviews from leading comic artists and industry experts”. And these will be exclusive chats, so you won’t have seen the content elsewhere before.
Sound good? Well then you’ll be happy to know that you won’t have long to wait to dive in, as Marvel Comics: The Variant Covers hits retail next week, on March the 30th, 2021.
